Freshmen place 8th
COLLEGE STATION — The Sherman Bearcats’ ninth- grade 7-on-7 team bounced back
from a tournament-opening loss to Burnet to place eighth in the state freshman 7-on-7 tournament.
After falling to
highly-ranked Burnet, the Bearcats managed to put up 106 points on their opposing teams throughout the day.
In their
second game they played the Irving Martin Warriors to a 20-20 tie. They then moved on to defeat Austin Westlake by the score
of 34-21.
In their final game of the tournament, the Bearcats came back from a three-touchdown deficit with five minutes
remaining to win, 42-41. The scoring touchdown came with the ball in the air and no time remaining on the clock.
Freshman
quarterback Thor Long completed over 200 passes throughout the day to his highly talented and aggressive young receivers.
Showcasing their acrobatic receiving talents were Tory Minor, Zach Whitfield, Jason Shelton, Sterling Brown, Sevin Jefferson,
Montrel Sommers, Josh Martinez and Torey Long.
Those players along with Jelani Howell, Chris Albert, Robert Gay, Zack
Martinez, and Kauilon Taylor, who came up with a crucial interception in Game 4, anchored the defense.
Bearcats get a win
COLLEGE STATION — The Sherman 7-on-7 football team suffered from a tough draw in pool
play Friday, but managed a win in the consolation bracket of the large-school division on Saturday.
In pool play, the
Bearcats opened with a 35-18 loss to pool winner Lake Travis and quarterback Garrett Gilbert, one of the nation’s top-ranked
junior recruits. The Cats followed with a 42-20 loss to Houston Langham Creek and a narrow 26-20 defeat to Tyler Lee.
“(Friday)
was not quite the day we’d hoped for, but it was good experience all around,” said Sherman 7-on-7 coach Marcus
Leinart.
In the consolation bracket Saturday, Sherman beat Killeen, 19-6, then lost to Rosenberg Terry, 20-18, in the
round of 16. The Bearcats scored on the last play of the game, but a game-tying conversion pass was intercepted.
Saturday’s
games were shortened from 40 minutes to 25 because of the threat of rain.
Cornerback Patrick Henderson ran back three
interceptions for touchdowns over the course of the tournament, including one in each of the two bracket games Saturday. Offensively,
junior Waymon James led the Bearcats in touchdown catches from senior Matt Rome and sophomore backup Madison Carter.
“You
obviously would want to win the whole thing, but it’s pretty special to qualify for state for a second year in a row,”
Leinart said. “Bearcat fans have lot to be excited about this fall.”
In the championship bracket, tournament
MVP Morgan Mickan threw touchdown passes to five different receivers to lead Georgetown to a 41-24 win over Houston Stratford.
Stratford’s Andrew Luck had two scoring passes to Grant Josey.
In an all-Rio Grande Valley consolation final
of the Class 4A-5A tournament, San Benito defeated McAllen Rowe, 41-34.
Southlake Carroll and Colleyville Heritage
were both relegated to the consolation bracket on Friday. Carroll, the defending Class 5A Division I champion, lost two of
three games in pool play and finished third in the four-team pool. Heritage, which won the 2006 7-on-7 state championship,
was also third in its four-team pool.
